"Guess what? We're the two best women's players in the world..."
As Venus and Serena Williams prepare to square off in the women’s singles Wimbledon Finals for the fourth time (and the second straight time) , we all are set to enjoy a treat on Independence Day. But with this showdown pending, I had a question stirring inside:
Are the Williams sisters the best same generation set of siblings to dominate a sport?
The statistics certainly say so. Venus’ career has seen her pile up 5 Wimbledon championships and 7 Grand Slam titles. Younger sister Serena has contributed 2 Wimbledon championships and 10 Grand Slam titles of her own.
The amazing thing about their dominance of the tennis landscape is that they have been able to establish and maintain their individual identities. Everyone is appreciate of the differences in their personalities and playing styles which have led them to such athletic success and worldwide fame. Serena, more of a natural socialite, has a power game that has been unrivaled by any of her contemporaries. The more reserved Venus has dominated the competition with an all-around game rooted in top-notch conditioning and tennis IQ.
If there could ever be anything unfortunate about the emergence of this duo, if could be this – just think of the other-worldly status that one of them would have been able to achieve if the other was not in the picture.
But the fact that they are both superstars, and will go down as legendary (from both a singles and doubles standpoint) probably says even more about them as sisters and individuals. True unparalleled dominance.
