Serena Williams: “Hey, Billie – I Got You”

Serena successfully defended her 2009 Wimbledon title with relative ease on Saturday.

While her big sister Venus has been busy trying to impress people with her fashion stylings, little sister Serena has been doing what she does best.

Winning Grand Slam titles.

Williams dusted #21-ranked Vera Zvonareva.  And when I say ”dusted,” I mean dusted.  Serena posted a straight set victory (6-3, 6-2) over the Russian that lasted a mere 67 minutes.  The win allowed Williams to notch her 13th singles Grand Slam title, which moved her past tennis legend Billie Jean King into sixth place in that category.

“My dream was able to come true. Everyone’s dream can come true if you just stick to it and work hard. This one is very special.”

“Hey, Billie – I got you. This is No. 13 for me now. It’s just amazing to able to be among such great people.”

Serena still has quite a ways to climb to get to the top of the list, however.  Here’s the top five ladies on this list:

5th – Martina Navratilova (18)

4th – Chris Evert (18)

3rd – Helen Wills (19)

2nd – Steffi Graf (22)

1st – Margaret Court (24)

So, basically, Williams would almost have to double her output up to this point prior to her retirement if she has visions of making it to the top.  Barring a run of consecutive Grand Slam titles, we probably won’t see this happening.

But without a doubt, Serena is firmly in control of the women’s singles tennis scene.
