Saints Dominate Browns…And Lose

It’s official. The 2010 Saints are nothing like last year’s version.

The defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints dominated the visiting Cleveland Browns today’s in the Louisiana Superdome. The Saints netted 394 yards while the Browns only netted 210. New Orleans totaled 25 first downs to just 12 for Cleveland. Accordingly, the Saints controlled the ball, as they had possession of the football for over 35 minutes.

But their offensive domination proved to be futile. N.O. quarterback Drew Brees threw 4 interceptions – two of which were returned for touchdowns by Browns linebacker David Bowens - almost giving the visitors as many points (14) as the home team would manage to score in a 30-17 triumph by Cleveland.

So far in 2010, Drew Brees has thrown 10 interceptions - after tossing a total of 11 in last season's Super Bowl campaign.

The Saints have looked like a shell of the team that rolled to a 13-3 mark and set an offensive standard in the process. Although they came into today’s game with a 4-2 record this season, New Orleans has played with fire. Their first three wins – versus Minnesota, at San Francisco and versus Carolina – were by 5 points, 3 points and 2 points, respectively. The defending champs have successfully skated on thin ice, and it finally cracked against Cleveland.

There’s no doubt that the four turnovers allowed the Browns to take a game that it didn’t expect to be competitive in. Prior to today, Cleveland’s offense ranked 31st in the NFL, with the Browns averaging 310 yards and 14.7 points per game. With their meager offensive production in today’s contest, which included a 9-16, 74-yard performance by rookie Colt McCoy and a 16 carry-69-yard tally by Peyton Hillis, their ranking won’t likely improve.

With three losses, all is not lost for the Saints. They still remain in the thick of the hunt for the NFC South division, but they must make a complete turnaround if they want to be relevant this season.

Derek Anderson Blasts Browns Fans

Derek Anderson was released by the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday. Anyone who has seen him play since his 2007 Pro Bowl season would easily understand why.

Last season Anderson completed only 45 percent of his pass attempts, threw only 3 TDs while tossing 10 INTs, and has a robust 42.1 QB rating.

Yet, despite all of those bottom-feeder stats, he found a reason to be mad at the Browns’ faithful. In an email to the News-Herald, Anderson wrote:

“The fans are ruthless and don’t deserve a winner. I will never forget getting cheered when I was injured. I know at times I wasn’t great. I hope and pray I’m playing when my team comes to town and (we) roll them.”

First off, D.A.’s statement is kind of like an admission that he stinks – or that at least he’s not a winner. By saying that they “don’t deserve a winner” after he was released, Anderson can seem to feel that his performance justified the Browns’ actions.

And speaking of prayer, Anderson will need it. The truth is that if he can’t play for the Browns – not exactly one of the best teams in the league - how in the world does he think he’s going to be playing (on the field) for another team?

And don’t be mad at the fans. It’s a fact of life that fans will express their discontent. You stink. They boo.

A word of advice for Anderson – if you land on another team, try not to stink.

Never underestimate King James’ clout.

Days after reportedly assaulting a close friend of LeBron James, reports are indicating that Cleveland Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards has been traded to the New York Jets. The trade, while not a complete shocker, was certainly quick to take shape after this weekend’s incident. The Jets sent receiver Chansi Stuckey, linebacker Jason Trusnik and undisclosed draft picks to Cleveland. Sorry guys.

Jets QB Mark Sanchez will have to hope that Braylon concentrates on catching the ball.

The New York Jets have been in the market for a receiver throughout most of the young season. They were connected to rumors of going after Denver’s Brandon Marshall and recently signed San Francisco rookie Michael Crabtree, but none of those avenues panned out. New York hopes to have Edwards team up with Jerricho Cotchery to form a formidable receiving tandem for upstart rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez.

Meanwhile, Edwards, a Pro-Bowl receiver in 2007, will be leaving a Cleveland team that will be competing for the worst record in the league. He’ll be headed to a Jets team who has the New York area in a frenzy behind their unexpected 3-1 start. The Michigan product must feel like he just hit the lottery.

This was an important development which will give any player hope if they feel like they are stuck as a member of a Cleveland Browns franchise going nowhere.

Get on LeBron James’ bad side and you’ll get a one-way ticket out of town.

LeBron James and Braylon Edwards Beefing??

With the Cleveland Browns fresh off a close loss to their interstate rivals, the Cincinnati Bengals – and Braylon Edwards not getting a reception for the first time in his career – the receiver lashed out at a club early Monday morning outside of a Cleveland night club. Reports indicate that the former Pro-Bowl receiver punched a patron in the face.

The victim of the lash out was Edwards Givens. A guy not of grand stature, but the acquaintance of someone with the grandest stature in Cleveland. Givens is a very close friend and business partner of LeBron James.

LeBron is on top of his game, but we can't say the same for Braylon.

Apparently, Edwards was more than aware of this. Givens says that the Browns’ wide receiver is not a fan of The Chosen One.

“Braylon comes up and started saying things, degrading me. He said if it wasn’t for LeBron or the Four Horsemen (James’ friends and business partners), I wouldn’t have what I have, nor would I be able to get girls. Everyone knows Braylon has a problem with LeBron.”

Sounds almost high-schoolish, right? Well, most of us would probably perceive Edwards’ statement as truth. Givens would probably even admit it in closed company. But it definitely looks like someone who doesn’t like Batman, but decides to pick on Robin instead.

So here comes Batman, I mean LeBron, to the rescue:

“I’ve never crossed paths with Braylon before, but it seems like there’s a little jealousy going on with Braylon and me and my friends. I have no idea why,” the Cavaliers superstar said. “I’ve never said anything to Braylon at all. But for him to do that is very childish. My friend (Edward Givens) is 130 pounds. Seriously. It’s like hitting one of my kids. It doesn’t make sense.”

“I’ve always allowed him and his friends to come into the club free of charge. Then he does this.”

Now, nowhere in the report was it mentioned that the night club was LeBron’s. But hey, right about now, King James owns everything in Cleveland.

It looks like Braylon is gonna have to pull out his wallet on his next club visit.

Browns Struggling To Score A Touchdown

They’re 0-3 in 2009. They’ve lost 9 straight regular season games dating back to last season. They’ve scored no important offensive touchdowns in those 9 games.

And now, they’re juggling quarterbacks – as if we believe that either of them will make a difference. I guess they forgot that there was a reason that they benched Derek Anderson in favor of Brady Quinn in the first place.

On top of that, now that the Detroit Lions have won a football game, the Cleveland Browns have inherited the title of the “laughing stock of the NFL”…the new Los Angeles Clippers of football, if you will.

Joshua Cribbs is one of the few bright spots for the Browns.

Is it me…or do the Browns truly look much worse to start this year than they did at the beginning of last year? Eric Mangini does not seem as if he’s able to motivate these guys at all. Late last year, Browns fans would have found it hard to imagine that they’d be wishing Romeo Crennel was still around…but that couldn’t be any farther from the truth.

Their defense give up big plays – including this ultra-embarrasing one right here. They yield 31.7 points per game (last in the NFL). Those points are due to the 413 (30th) yards per game their defense is giving up, which includes 184 yards on the ground (also 30th).

And their offense is downright offensive to watch. They are averaging 9.7 points a game (31st in the NFL) and 218 ypg (last).

So, Cleveland’s opponents are outscoring them by 22 points per game and outgaining them by a whopping 195 yards per game.

The statistics don’t lie. Right now, the Browns are undoubtedly the worst team in the NFL. Now we’ll be able to see if they can challenge the Lions record for futility, matching their 0-16 season from a year ago.

And on their way to futility, maybe they’ll score a touchdown or two.
