They’re 0-3 in 2009. They’ve lost 9 straight regular season games dating back to last season. They’ve scored no important offensive touchdowns in those 9 games.

And now, they’re juggling quarterbacks – as if we believe that either of them will make a difference. I guess they forgot that there was a reason that they benched Derek Anderson in favor of Brady Quinn in the first place.

On top of that, now that the Detroit Lions have won a football game, the Cleveland Browns have inherited the title of the “laughing stock of the NFL”…the new Los Angeles Clippers of football, if you will.

Joshua Cribbs is one of the few bright spots for the Browns.

Is it me…or do the Browns truly look much worse to start this year than they did at the beginning of last year? Eric Mangini does not seem as if he’s able to motivate these guys at all. Late last year, Browns fans would have found it hard to imagine that they’d be wishing Romeo Crennel was still around…but that couldn’t be any farther from the truth.

Their defense give up big plays – including this ultra-embarrasing one right here. They yield 31.7 points per game (last in the NFL). Those points are due to the 413 (30th) yards per game their defense is giving up, which includes 184 yards on the ground (also 30th).

And their offense is downright offensive to watch. They are averaging 9.7 points a game (31st in the NFL) and 218 ypg (last).

So, Cleveland’s opponents are outscoring them by 22 points per game and outgaining them by a whopping 195 yards per game.

The statistics don’t lie. Right now, the Browns are undoubtedly the worst team in the NFL. Now we’ll be able to see if they can challenge the Lions record for futility, matching their 0-16 season from a year ago.

And on their way to futility, maybe they’ll score a touchdown or two.

“Who can most effectively run the offense?”

“Who can look at the defense, understand what the coverage is and go to the right place with the ball?”

“Who can see a blitz look and put us in the right play?”

These are all questions from the new Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini. These are also questions that are easily answered by anyone that paid attention to the 2008 edition of the Browns.

Last year was destined to be a breakout season for the team. After a 2007 season that saw the Browns post some gaudy offensive statistics. That season saw second-year quarterback Derek Anderson pass for over 3700 yards and 29 touchdowns. He was a Pro Bowl selection. A pleasant surprise considering he lost the preseason position battle to Charlie Frye (who was shipped to Seattle weeks later).

Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow, Joshua Cribbs and Jamal Lewis all provided a high-powered punch into Cleveland’s offense. This was an exciting, talented team with impressive skill players at each key position.

Quinn performed much better than Anderson in 2008.

Then came 2008. The Cleveland schedule was stuffed with great teams. They were scheduled to appear on national television broadcasts on quite a few different points in the season. But after an 0-3 start out of the box, the Browns could not recover. The offense struggled to move the ball down the field.

Anderson, the 2007 QB stud, saw the most notable decline in his game. The Browns’ first round draft pick, Brady Quinn, would see action relieving the starter. Quinn performed well, and eventually was named the starter. Quinn displayed a level of maturity and understanding of game situation way beyond his years, and consequently achieved some success. Brady later suffered an injury, at which time Anderson reclaimed the starting spot. More mediocrity was abound during Anderson second QB stint in the season.

So, here we are – and Mangini wants to see it all for himself.
