Saints Overcome 21-Point Deficit

Pierre Thomas and the Saints "hung in there" and got the job done against the Dolphins.

The cinderella story of the New Orleans Saints continued on Sunday.

The Saints scored 36 points in the second half to emerge with the 46-34 victory over the Miami Dolphins.  Even after a subpar first half performance – in which they trailed 24-3 at one point – the undefeated team still managed 414 yards of total offense.

Miami raced to a fast start in the opening half.  Ricky Williams rushed for 2 TDs and Ronnie Brown scored another as the Dolphins built the 21-point cushion.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees suffered his worst outing of the season, throwing three interceptions and enduring five sacks.  As a team, however, New Orleans was able to compose itself and mount three consecutive, impressive drives in the second half (of 82, 71 and 79 yards) which turned the outcome of the game in their favor.  Ultimately, the fourth quarter belonged to the Saints as they outscored the Dolphins 22-0.

New Orleans Head Coach Sean Payton:

“There were a lot of things we didn’t do well in the first half… I was just proud of the way we kind of hung in there, hung in there and hung in there.”

Once again, the New Orleans defense also made huge contributions in the win.  Darren Sharper and Tracy Porter each intercepted passes and returned them for touchdowns.  For the season, the Saints have noew returned five interceptions for touchdowns against their opponents.

The victory leaves the Saints as the only undefeated team in the NFC.
