After racking up 45 points in their season opener against the woeful Detroit Lions, we expected to learn a lot about the New Orleans Saints this week. Or at least I did.
What I expected to learn was that they could not move the ball freely against a legitimate defense. I expected to learn that they would not run up a ridiculous amount of points on a real playoff contending team. Finally, I thought I would find out that Drew Brees is not all that he has been hyped up to be.
The cops can read me my rights now – because I was guilty on all three counts of player-hating.

Reggie Bush is just one of the many offensive weapons on this New Orleans team.
Today, the Saints proved that regardless of opponent, they will play the same explosive offense that can potentially embarrass their opponents. So far this year, they are 2-for-2 in the ‘opponent-embarrassment’ category, demolishing the Philadelphia Eagles 48-22.
New Orleans led the game 17-13 at the half, but then scored 17 straight points to open the second half. Two early third quarter Eagles turnovers led to two Saints touchdowns. Drew Brees did his normal Sunday job, going 25/34 for 311 yards passing with 3 TDs. Wide receiver Marques Colston caught 2 touchdown passes and running back Reggie Bush added a 19-yard touchdown run for New Orleans.
Philadelphia, without their franchise quarterback Donovan McNabb, started Kevin Kolb on Sunday. And although he passed for 391 yards, Kolb made some poor decisions – most notably three interceptions.
“I’ve got to cut those turnovers out,” Kolb said. “I know better than that. I will do it.”
That is assuming that Kolb will get a second shot. Now that the Eagles have performed due diligence by giving Kolb his shot to lead the team, don’t be surprised to see him get the hook before next Sunday. With Michael Vick back practicing and veteran Jeff Garcia now in the fold, the Eagles have a plethora of quarterbacks with more talent and experience than Kolb.
While the Eagles look to patch up their quarterback situation, the Saints want to keep their momentum. In a division with dangerous teams – some of whom have struggled in their opening games – New Orleans realizes that they need to keep the pressure on them.
“If you look at our skill group, each game no guy ever knows who’s day it’s gonna be,” Brees said. “Each guy knows it’s their job to open things up for everyone else.”
Right now, things couldn’t be any more open for New Orleans.
