Saints Creep Past the Redskins

Sean Payton's gained their 12 victory of the season because the Redskins have a history of folding under pressure.

”When you’re hot, you’re hot. And sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.”

New Orleans linebacker Jonathan Vilma said a mouthful.  But he could have went one step further and said sometimes it’s better to be playing the Washington Redskins than to be good.

The Saints needed some mishaps that only the Redskins could provide in order to leave Landover, Maryland with a 33-30 overtime win.  New Orleans kept its undefeated season in tact, lifting its record to 12-0.

Leading the Saints 30-23, the Redskins had moved the ball to the New Orleans’ 6 yard line – which set them up for a 23-yard field goal attempt.  Washington kicker Shaun Suisham missed the kick wide to the right.

Sellers overtime fumble proved to be the nail in the coffin for Washington.

Sellers' overtime fumble proved to be the nail in the coffin for Washington.

Drew Brees and his team went to work after the Washington error, striking quickly with a 53-yard touchdown to Robert Meachem to tie the game and force overtime.

The home team won the toss to gain possession at the start of overtime.  But after Mike Sellers caught a pass, he was immediately hit by Chris McAllister.  The hit caused a fumble that McAllister recovered at the Washington 37.  The New Orleans offense moved the football to the Washington 1 yard line before having kicker Garret Hartley put the winning field goal through the uprights.

Washington has had a history of playing up or down to the level of their competition.  This was a game that almost any other team would have put away by making the basic plays – but the Redskins always find ways to lose these types of games.

The Saints have clinched a playoff birth and look to be on their way to getting home field in the NFC.  They’ll continue to march on at a shot for a history-making season.
