Eagles Must Choose To Support Vick

The stage is set.  The cast and crew have been assembled.  Time for the show to start.  Lights…camera…action…

Thursday night will mark the Eagles debut for Michael Vick.  This will be the first time that the former Pro Bowler takes the field since his 23-month sentence for bankrolling dogfighting.  Tonight, NFL fans should get some of their questions answered.  We’ll all get to see if Vick look anything like his old self.  True football conditioning may take some time, but everyone wants to see if small glimpses of the old mega-athletic, multiskilled icon become evident.

The atmosphere surrounding this preseason game may turn out to be extraordinary.  But in the same breath, they may develop into troubling circumstances.  There’s the possibility of protests (from animal rights advocates), as well as the chance for pro-Vick support at the game site.  And these possibilities will not only exist for this game – but for any game that the Eagles play all season (and beyond).  Needless to say, the Eagles will have to handle this situation carefully.

How will the former Hokie look in his return to the gridiron?

The Philadelphia franchise made the choice to sign Vick (for what could be a two-year term), and they have to deal with all the drama that comes their way.  But while they do this, they must make sure that they unequivocally give Michael Vick all of the nurture and support that he needs.  Philly has made its choice.  It was a well-examined choice.  One which I am positive was analyzed from all angles.  Now, it is imperative that they stand by that choice.

The larger entity of the NFL (courtesy of Roger Goddell) gave Vick another opportunity to play in its league.  The Philadelphia Eagles have become the supporting structure for the convicted dog killer.  It must do all it can to make its new relationship become one that is profitable for Vick, Philadelphia and the NFL.

First up is how they handle the drama on Thursday night.  I am hoping that they hold up their end of the bargain, for the sake of Vick…for the sake of the fans…and for the sake of the NFL.
