Another Winless Team Beats the Redskins

Matt Cassel got his first win with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Jim Zorn – get your bags packed for your next coaching assignment…because this gig is just about up.
The Washington Redskins loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, 14-6. The Chiefs were the final winless team in the NFL prior to today’s action.
This marks to third time this season that the Zorn-led Redskins have faltered against a winless team. After the game, Zorn was stripped of his play-calling duties. Earlier in the season Washington was defeated by the Detroit Lions, who had lost 19 straight regular season games entering their contest. Last week, Washington was upended by the Carolina Panthers (0-4 coming into that game).
Redskins defensive end Phillip Daniels:

Jason Campbell has taken the blame for a lot of the Redskins' offensive inefficiency.
”When you lose to teams that you know you should beat, when teams that hadn’t won a game come in and beat us, it just makes it tough. ‘Everybody’s looking at us as a win right now, and until we change things and turn that around, they’re going to continue to look at us that way.”
During the game, Washington benched starting quarterback Jason Campbell in favor of Todd Collins. But this was a move that was bound to happen for a team that was struggling mightily to put points on the board.
Redskins head coach Jim Zorn:
”I felt the need to create a spark on our football team offensively and went with Todd. ‘I think the guys responded well. We kept our spark, at times, and then we refizzled.”
Fizzling would indicate some sort of explosiveness to their game – which the Redskins are sorely lacking. While the net yards for the teams was fairly close – 268 for K.C. and 265 for Washington – there was a huge discrepancy in first downs. Kansas City had 16 while Washington had just 7. That contrast lies in one team which is efficiently moving the ball versus another that is getting a few plays that make up the majority of its yardage.
Now the Chiefs were not an offensive juggernaut by any means. They were only able to convert field goals, but they did convert 4 of them – which doubled the offensive scoring of the Redskins.
Chiefs’ quarterback Matt Cassel:
”There’s been a lot of change, but this has definitely been special. We rose to the occasion. We made some big plays. We put ourselves in a position to score points.”
Cassel needs to give credit where credit is due. Having the Redskins on their schedule definitely helped them avoid a winless season.
