Stinespring Out of the Driver’s Seat?

Was Beamer's 27th loss against a Top 5 opponent the straw that broke Stinespring's back?
As a media source, I’m supposed to be unbiased about this.
But as a Virginia Tech alum, I had to restrain myself from doing cartwheels in the office when I discovered this. Over the past couple of days, Gobbler Country has brought Hokie football fans some earth-shattering news.
OK, enough with the build-up…
After years of unrelenting pressure from the Virginia Tech faithful…
…Bryan Stinespring has been stripped off his offensive play-calling duties.
Now I’m definitely not one to marvel in the descent of others, and I – like others -would have sincerely welcomed an offensive repertoire which either exploited the opponent’s weaknesses or favored the skill set of the Hokie players. As I’ve mentioned many time before – most times, it was extremely tough to recognize that the offensive plays were focused in either capacity.
Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer has indicated that Hokies quarterback coach Mike O’Cain will be calling the plays on offense. Stinespring, the team’s offensive coordinator since 2002, will retain his current title – which is probably representative of the fact that he’s not been demoted financially, but rather in responsibility alone.
What does that mean?
I’m betting that this means Beamer may have made this change, while reserving the right for Stinespring to earn back his responsibility. How he could ever earn it back is beyond me. But perhaps given O’Cain’s track record (also highlighted in Gobbler Country), a swift change may be necessary at some point.
But for now, we’ll just have to settle for someone other than Stinespring running the show. And given the years the Hokies have run their safe, habitual plays, did we ever think we’d see this day arrive?
