Tom Izzo: Why is Cleveland So Infatuated With Him?

Would Izzo be able to transform his NCAA success into NBA success?

Maybe someone can help me out because I still don’t get it.

The Cleveland Cavaliers just completed a season that saw it win 61 games.  They made it into the second round of the playoffs, where they were outplayed – and certainly outcoached – by a superior organization.  Their franchise player is flirting with various cities, enjoying being courted by multiple teams.

And with such an abundant amount of disarray, the Cavaliers are focusing their attention on locking down Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo.

This makes absolutely no sense to me.

Sure, Izzo has proven to be one of the best coaches in the NCAA.  His list of accomplishments are, in today’s college game, nothing short of legendary:

  • 71.4% winning percentage (364-146)
  • 13 straight NCAA tournament appearances (1998-2010)
  • 6 Big Ten titles
  • 6 Final Four appearances
  • NCAA championship

Would LeBron be able to soar to new heights with Tom Izzo as his mentor?

He’s done it all in the college game.  So, the next logical challenge for him is to see if he can duplicate his success elsewhere.  Why not start with the NBA?

It’s not a bad move at all…from Izzo’s perspective.  As far as the Cavs go, they definitely need to stay away from him.

Cleveland desperately needs to hire a coach who is not afraid of LeBron.  I’ve said this before the Cavs were presented with the threatening possibility of King James walking away, and – with Mike Brown and Danny Ferry exiting stage left – now is the perfect time for them to make a splash and get an experienced, authoritative leader to be their coach.

Who has the guts to challenge LeBron?

Not Tom Izzo.  He’d be new to the NBA.  He’s not a coach with ample NBA experience.  He’s hasn’t developed any discernment of how NBA offenses and defenses need to be executed differently than in the NCAA.

The Cavs are copping out again and – regardless of the statements made by Cavs owner Dan Gilbert - grabbing Izzo will make things easier for LeBron.  James would more than likely be able to mold a coach who is not well-versed in what it takes to be effective in the NBA.  Their second choice, however – Byron Scott – would be more suitable to provide James with the occasional resistance he may need to take him to the next level (if he stays put in Cleveland).

The bottom line is this: Izzo is not going to cut it for Cleveland.
