Suns Close Out Spurs, Advance to Western Finals

Thanks to effort of this type, the Phoenix Suns have earned their trip to the Western Conference Finals.

In Western Conference Semifinal matchup with teams that exhibit predictable styles of play, the result of the series was any but predictable.

On Sunday night, the Phoenix Suns completed a four-game sweep of the San Antonio Spurs by winning Game 4 in San Antonio, 107-101.

In tonight’s game, the Suns got its biggest games from its biggest stars – All-Stars Steve Nash and Amar’e Stoudamire.  Nash (20 points and 9 assists) and Stoudamire (29 points) also received great support form their bench, namely Jared Dudley.  The former Boston College star and ACC Player of the Year scored 16 points (6-7 FG), including an amazing 3-3 performance from the three-point arc.  In total, ten different players scored points against the Spurs, who are usually rather stingy with the points.

But in this game, it was more of the same old story.  The Suns were able to get the scoring into triple digits, which is not a game that San Antonio wanted to play.  Phoenix’s wide-open style of play saw them knock down 10 treys (3-3 for Nash, 3-3 for Dudley).  This was a notable difference in the game, as the Spurs were only able to connect on four long-range bombs (4-11).  The Suprs were just a step slower than their opponents, and that is unusual for a team that it always prepared – as San Antonio routinely is.

The Suns are finding the right mix of running, slowing it down, and grinding out possessions on the defensive end – so it seems that they could have a shot at imposing their will onto the Lakers (assuming their 3-0 lead will result in a series win).

The Suns had no problems with the Spurs, which came as a surprise. I think they have a legitimate chance to beat the Lakers, but it should be a close series. I'm pulling for the Jazz to win at least one game so the Suns have a longer rest before the next series. Go Suns!

Thanks for the article. I don't know, the Suns don't have anyone who can match up with Gasol or Bynum, there's talk that Lopez might be able to play in the series, but he still might not be at 100%, so we'll see. I hope the Suns finally go to the finals, though.
