Hubie Brown. Mark Jackson. Marv Albert. Jeff Van Gundy. Reggie Miller. Mike Fratello. Doug Collins. Kevin Harlan. These are some of the NBA playoff voices that I don’t mind hearing at all. A couple of them I actually enjoy. And so far, this year’s playoffs have been some of the most enjoyable in recent memory.
Then I read this article and suddenly realized why I have experienced a greater level of satisfaction with this year’s games.
I don’t have anything personal against Bill Walton; I just think he sucks as an announcer. Let’s count the reasons that he sucks:
-
He over-exaggerates everything. Every description of anything that happens ends with the phrase “in the history of the NBA/Western civilization/basketball”…you get the picture.

-
He actually wore a tie-dyed shirt to broadcast an NBA game. Isn’t there a dress code for announcers? If not, there should be one for him.
-
Every broadcast he talks about his son (Lakers forward Luke Walton) without telling viewers who his son is. He proceeds to tell a story that he just made up.
-
He goes off on tangents while the game is in action…players are scoring, making plays…and he’s ignoring the game at hand and is telling his story.
-
He always has to refer to himself as one of the all-time greats, while insinuating that he is in the category as legendary players like Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, Pete Maravich, etc..
Give me a break. Let’s just let Walton enjoy his time off. I know I am.
