Will MLB Ever Institute Instant Replay?

Jim Joyce could have used a little help to prevent tonight's unfortunate ending.
In a time when other major sports – the NBA and the NFL – have implemented instant replay to get calls right during key moments in games, will major league baseball jump on board?
Tonight in Detroit, Armando Galarraga pitched a brilliant game against the Cleveland Indians.
For 8 and 2/3 inning, Galarraga had not given up a hit or a walk. With two outs in the top of the ninth, Indian Jason Donald tapped a slow roller between first and second base. The ball was fielded by Miguel Cabrera, and Galarraga immediately ran to first base to cover the bag. The pitcher received the throw a half-step before Donald’s foot touched down on first base.
But umpire Jim Joyce didn’t see it that way.
Joyce ruled that Donald had beat the throw. And with one emphatic call, Galarraga’s aspirations on tossing the third perfect game of the season – and the first in Detroit Tigers history – went up in smoke.
But afterward, Joyce had a chance to review the replay. And to make matters worse, he agrees that he badly missed the call:
” It was the biggest call of my career, and I kicked the (stuff) out of it. I just cost that kid a perfect game.”
” I thought he beat the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw, until I saw the replay.”
What a sad ending to what would have been a celebratory night in Detroit.
Galarraga handled Joyce miscall with grace and understanding, showing the ultimate respect to the sport that he mastered so well tonight.
Now, it’s time for the MLB authorities to allow the game to do all it can to show that it respects its players.
