Beginning in 2003, the owners and players agreed to award home field advantage to the pennant winning team from league that is victorious in the midsummer classic.
Quite frankly, I think this was a ludicrous decision.
Why would major league baseball not have this be an earned distinction throughout the course of a 162-game season? Baseball has by far the highest number of contests in its tradition season. At the end of such a long season, I would expect to be rewarded with some advantage if my team had a better record than my opponent.
But tying this back into an All-Star game makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. You have players from all teams…some of which are already well out of the pennant race. These players (albeit they are All-Stars) could be deciding the outcome of the World Series – only I am sure that they don’t treat it with that much seriousness.
I mean after all…it’s just an All-Star game.
