Did Griffey Catch a Nap During Saturday’s Game?

Back in the 90's, Ken Griffey, Jr. was the best player in the history of the Seattle Mariners.
Have you ever caught your head bobbing in your cubicle at the office?
I’m almost positive that the answer is “yes”…did you get fired for it? Maybe you didn’t get caught?
Ken Griffey Jr. has been accused of catching a nap at his job. But unlike people in the traditional workforce, he wasn’t working during the time of the alleged nap. There was speculation that Junior was needed for work (in a pinch-hitting role), however, was passed over because he was snoozing in the dugout.
Now, the Mariners are backtracking a bit on the initial statement that a member of the team made:
All I can say is that it’s really sad to see something like this as we approach the conclusion of the storied career of one of the best baseball players in the history of the game.
Griffey was great with the bat and the glove in his first run with the Mariners. Injuries slowed him down tremendously when he joined the Cincinnati Reds, but he still produced at the plate. The general consensus is that Griffey has held on too long, and that he should have hung up his cleats a few seasons ago.
Someone as great as Griffey (was) deserves a break. And I’ve got a few ideas that might keep him from snoring at game time:
- Give Griffey an i-Pod: Griffey (and Jamie Moyer) have been playing so long, that the technology has changed on them. They are still recording stuff on cassettes. Sometimes Griffey can be seen with his “hat-2-da-back” – somebody needs to inform the brother that TLC broke up a long time ago. Let him have an i-Pod or better yet, an i-Phone, and that’ll puzzle him and keep him awake.
- Score more runs: The Mariners score about as much as Steve Urkel did with Laura Winslow. From April 30 through May 8 (the day of the alleged snooze), Seattle only crossed home plate twelve times. That’s just 1.5 runs per contest. Baseball is boring enough when runs are being scored. The Mariners’ play made it easy for his eyes to get heavy.
- Starbucks to the rescue: Isn’t Seattle home to the coffee super chain, Starbucks? There should be more than enough joe in town to keep his eyes open. Good luck trying to wake up his slumbering bat, though…
- Put Griffey on the Jumbotron: Any embarrassing situation can be made more so by putting in on a grander scale. If I was Seattle skipper Don Wakamatsu, I would work with the technical staff to get Griffey on the jumbo screen more often. Nothing will keep Junior awake better than him knowing that his drool with be exposed to everyone in the stadium.
