Clemens Defiant in Drug Denials

There may be some troubling days ahead for The Rocket.

Upon hearing that major league baseball’s best pitcher over a two decade span, “The Rocket” Roger Clemens, was finally indicted for his alleged perjurious actions before Congress, I could only think one thing…

I’m glad that this clean-up of the mess that was made in baseball is one person closer to being over.

As long as we know that there were players with huge clouds looming over their heads, it’s hard for fans to get on with the full enjoyment of the game.  The game were hitting 30-plus home runs signals a power hitter – and not the ridiculous 45-plus homer seasons we witnessed in the 90′s.  The game where hitting 100 miles per hour on the radar gun is something that is regularly accomplished by a few select pitchers – and not 3 or 4 pitchers on every team.

In no way am I saying that Clemens is guilty.  He has emphatically denied his involvement with performance enhancing drugs from the start.  Yesterday, here was Clemens’ reaction to the news via his Twitter account:

Clemens' friendship with Pettitte may end up being a costly one.

“I never took HGH or Steroids. And I did not lie to Congress. I look forward to challenging the Governments accusations, and hope people will keep an open mind until trial. I appreciate all the support I have been getting. I am happy to finally have my day in court.”

Of course, we all know that it’s natural for someone to stick with their story (whether it’s the truth or not) until the end.  But the one thing that’s interesting about Clemens is that there is no statistical evidence of his alleged use of PEDs.

One may say that, in his case, the evidence is that there is, indeed, no evidence…and he was able to merely sustain his performance well into his 40′s.  After all, the guy won Cy Youngs in three different decades (seven, total).  But in most cases, there’s some kind of quantitative dip prior to the alleged usage date or, conversely, some quantitative improvement after the alleged usage date.  His statistics fail to indicate either of those trends.

But Andy Pettitte, a good friend and former teammate of Clemens, gave the feds the most credible piece of evidence.  When a good friend goes on record with a statement against you, what does that say?  It has to hold a lot of water, right?

Well, it won’t be long until we find out.  And I can’t wait.
