The New York Knicks are at it again.
Donnie Walsh has given Amar’e Stoudemire what he so desperately wanted, but what everyone in the basketball world knows he didn’t deserve.
Well, everyone in the basketball world except for Walsh apparently.
A-Stat has agreed to a 5-year, $100 million deal with the New York Knicks. This is reportedly part of the Knicks’ master plan to attract LeBron James. Sign some talent that would be complementary to their primary target – - in hopes of landing that target.
"$100 mil? How can I turn that down?"
Of course, the only problem with thus scenario is that complementary talent shouldn’t come with a franchise player price tag. And yes, an average salary of $20 million should be considered a salary worthy of a franchise player.
But what if the Knicks aren’t able to secure the services of Mr. James? Or D-Wade (who’s clearly leaning toward Miami or Chicago)? Well, then New York has done what it has so many times in the past – - paid a big premium for an above average talent who is incapable of improving the franchise.
On the contrary, if James does take the bait, the Cavs should be kicking themselves. Cleveland had a chance to make a pitch to acquire Stoudemire at the trade deadline. And if James goes to the Big Apple to team up with Stoudemire, Cleveland will have to live with the fact that it could have avoided losing LeBron.
As far as New York goes, only time will tell as to whether they will receive a return on their investment.
But it certainly was a steep investment.
