Hating on Howard

It seems like Kareem Abdul-Jabaar and Shaquille O’Neal have each caught a glimpse of the future - and they aren’t liking what they are seeing.

First, Shaq-Fu had to prove his ignorance.  Then, Kareem threw in his two cents about Dwight.  And in a display of true humility, Howard concurred with Kareem (what athletes can actually admit their shortcomings these days).  But T Lamont smells something else brewing under the surface…

Dwight Howard has become somewhat of a media darling.  The 23-year-old phenom was the 1st pick in the 2004 NBA Draft and has improved his game each year.  He has all of the gifts that you can’t teach, including size (6’11″, 265 lbs.), strength (365-lb. bench-press) and athleticism (2008 Slam Dunk Champion).

Howard also reaches out to the community.  He proudly confesses that he’s a born-again Christian.  He enjoys the game, play with lots of enthusiasm, and his infectious character permeates even the most tense moments of the game.  Even on bad calls (i.e. calls that don’t go his way), he’ll walk away with a coy smile – after a look of disbelief, of course.

"I'm such a good guy, I even sweep the floor after practice."

"I'm such a good guy, I even sweep the floor after practice."

The guy is really the complete package – personally and professionally – and my guess is that Shaquille O’Neal and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar have been drinking some Hatorade.  Why say anything but positive things about a guy who looks to be the dominant center of the next decade?  Are you really trying to encourage him to improve?  Do you think he’s not working his butt off to get better everyday?  Maybe they’re just plain bashing him because they are both Lakers-at-heart and are trying to mess with his head?  Or perhaps they feel that their legacies are in jeopardy?

Whatever the reason, Howard is the real deal on the court.  But unlike these guys, he’s even more likable when he’s not on the court.
