Floyd Mayweather Totally Dominates Marquez

Floyd Mayweather’s last bout was about 21 months ago.  It looked like it was only 21 days ago.

In tonight’s much anticipated showdown, Floyd Mayweather totally dominated Juan Manuel Marquez by unanimous decision. 

Floyd came into the bout heavier than his opponent – he weighed in at 146 while Marquez weighed in at 142.  Mayweather also had discernible advantages in height (1 inch), reach (3 inches) and age (4 years younger).  But all of these advantages withstanding, Marquez was supposed to push Mayweather to his limits.  Marquez has been noted as a tough, aggressive counter puncher whose style figured to translate well in a battle with Mayweather.

On Saturday night, Mayweather proved that he is in a class of his own.  The undefeated boxer controlled the fight with his jab, and confused Marquez with his degree of technical brilliance.  Mayweather’s speed and power were unmatched.  Over and over, Floyd countered missed punches with quick shots that stunned Marquez.

As the rounds continued, Marquez appeared more and more beaten…more and more dazed.  He had no answer for Mayweather’s swagger.  All in all, Floyd connected on 59% of his total punches, while Marquez only landed 12% of his.  Mayweather equally distributed his jabs and power punches (also landing 59% of each).  It was a completely dominant performance by a fighter universally regarded as one of the best (if not the best) pound-for-pound boxer.

But even more interesting was the post fight drama.  As Mayweather was being interviewed, he was asked about the decision to stay heavier at 146 pounds (which cost him money).  Mayweather balked at answering the question.  Then, he was asked about a possible match-up with “Sugar” Shane Mosley.  Mosley walked up during the interview and said that “the fans want to see a good fight so let’s get it on”.  Mayweather felt insulted by Mosley interrupting his interview and both parties had to be separated. 

Marquez was later interviewed after the fight.  He said that Mayweather’s speed and defense was great.  And he said that if he would have had 2 or 3 more fights at this size it would have been a different story.  Whatever.

In addition to the talk of a Mosley-Mayweather bout, there has been mention of a possible Mayweather match-up with Manny Pacquiao.  Marquez gave Pacquiao all that he could handle on two separate occasions (a draw and a decision to Pacquiao).  That was part of what made tonight’s lopsided result more surprising.

Regardless of the post fight drama one thing remains clear – Mayweather has proven that his technical boxing brilliance has no equivalent.
