Carmelo Still A Step Behind Kobe, LeBron

Carmelo Still A Step Behind Kobe, LeBron

With dominating performances in the Nuggets’ first two games of the new NBA season, Carmelo Anthony has shown an even greater level of aggressiveness in his game.

Denver has posted victories over the Utah Jazz (114-105) and the Portland Trailblazers (97-94).  Anthony has combined for 71 points in those games, continuing to show his well-rounded offensive repertoire in the process.

Melo is a virtuoso with the ball.  He’s one of a very limited number of NBA players who are equally skilled in all aspects at the offensive end:

- Good ball-handler / creator off the dribble

- Good 3-point range

- Ability to play with his back to the basket / post up game

- Aggressive offensive rebounder and finisher

- Good free throw shooter…particularly in clutch situations

Anthony's physical style leads to many bumps and bruises.

Anthony's physical style leads to many bumps and bruises.

Because the Nuggets are poised to be contenders in the Western Conference and may duplicate the #3 that they attained for last year’s postseason, Anthony should certainly hear his name legitimately mentioned among the top candidates for the league’s MVP award.  His situation could be similar to Steve Nash winning in back-to-back years…or Dirk Nowitzki winning in 2006-2007.  Great offensive players on upper echelon teams.

But the last two seasons have witnessed a different breed of MVP.  Kobe Bryant and LeBron James represent the consumate idea of an MVP – players who are equipped to beat you in every way imaginable.  Their excellence includes something that Melo is improving upon – defensive effort.

Anthony’s athleticism is not at the level of LeBron or Kobe, but his has expressed his desire to give more effort on the defensive end of the court.  And assuming that the Cavs’ and Lakers’ success will be similar to that of last season, Melo’s performance will have to be head and shoulders above his contemporaries.

Odds are that Melo will get his chance at one or both of them in the playoffs.  And that will prove to be the most meaningful performance of them all.
